By the middle of the seventeenth century, tea was well established in both France and Britain as a medicinal brew, with tisanes and spiced teas being used to treat headaches and fatigue.

Later, ceremonies for the drinking of tea became a popular pastime amongst the well-to-do, with fine cups and saucers, teapots and tea caddies adding to the ritual.

While fine china and porcelain were the traditional materials used to make tea sets, they have now been replaced by metal, in particular by steel.

Steel tea sets usually consists of a tea pot, at least two tea cups with accompanying saucers and teaspooons, a tea strainer, a sugar bowl with tiny tongs or spoon, and a milk jug.

Steel tea sets can stand up to harsher handling as compared to those made from fragile materials.  Once a porcelain saucer is chipped, that tea set is no longer wholly presentable to guests.  Neither is it safe because anyone can easily cut themselves on that chipped edge.

Steel tea sets are also able to withstand the frequently accummulating tannin stains that cheaper aluminum ones cannot.

Aluminum also dents rather easily.

Once that happens to your tea set, the only way to salvage it would be to dent it in other areas such that it appears to be a deliberate pattern, although one would be ill-advised to try this out.

The various components of steel tea sets can also be used to greater advantage than those made from other materials.

Pure steel is not a good conductor of heat, hence the tea pot and the tea cups will be able to retain heat and keep the beverage warm to your liking.  Similarly, the milk jug can be filled with cold milk or placed in the refridgerator until it is required.  Its contents will remain cool throughout its use.

On the serving front, steel tea sets make a stylish and modern impression.  They are suitable for an evening wind-down after dinner or an afternoon cuppa with lunch or high tea.  In the morning, the bright and clean lines of steel tea sets are sure to awaken the senses.

If your tea set comes with only two serving cups, it is an easy matter to expand your set for four or more by buying other steel teacups and saucers in similar designs to build up an eclectic collection.

Steel tea sets are indeed a boon to any home entertainer as their flexibility in usage and presentation are limited only by one's imagination.
