A steel masher is a very useful
gadget in today's kitchens. It works by squashing
lumps as it is manually pumped up and down. It is most
popular for mashing potatoes or other cooked ingredients
that are too large to mash with a fork, such as chickpeas
when making a hummus dip.
The classic steel masher has round
perforations on a steel plate, a sturdy ergonomically-designed
handle and a good grip with rubber padding. For the
traditionalist, this is the best model to use for making
mashed potatoes and will produce a lumpy, heavier mash with
a true potato taste

instead of a store-bought instant texture. There are newfangled steel mashers designs that look more stylish with modifications to the steel plate and most perform just as well.
The easiest way to obtain a velvety smooth mash is to use a potato ricer, which is a perforated metal drum with a metal disc attached that forces the potato through. This variation of the steel masher works on the same principle as a garlic press, only it is much larger.
Although more expensive than a conventional steel masher, potato ricers are exceptionally effective and will give you light and fluffy, lump-free mash every time.
It can save you some time in the kitchen as the potatoes do not even have to be peeled.
Place cooked and quartered potatoes into the ricer, squeeze
the handles together, and watch as the mashed potatoes come
out without the peels! However, clean-up of the apparatus will be a little trickier than compared to the normal steel masher. |

If you are making baby or convalescent food, a rotary steel masher would be better suited. It resembles a meat grinder and the hand-cranked blade will force the food through the fine perforations below. You will not only be able to mash more types of food, but you can do so with reduced mess to your kitchen.
